The Boy from Barnado's film
17.03.15

We have had a request from Andrew Muir, a lecturer at Bournemouth and Poole College. He is wondering if we might be able to help.

He is currently working on devising a new play based around the history of the Constitution Hill site. He has found the site a wealth of knowledge and was wondering if we knew of any route he could take to get his hands on The Boy From Barnardo's film? He's tried many different sites on the internet, but as yet there's no breakthrough. The play will be taking place at some point in May and will be a promenade performance, whereby the audience will be walked around the site whilst being engaged with a play that is taking place around them.

I will get more details on this and let you know when I receive confirmation.

Update: Thomas Oliver Davies
17.03.15

Gordon Brocklehurst made contact to say "I calculate that we overlapped by two years or so, but may not remember each other; all of the officers and teachers that he mentions I remember well, and I also was in the band (fife) and gymnastics team around that time. If he cares to look through my photographs that you have kindly posted, he may well recognise Kay Fane, Woodward, and Ernie Carey." Gordon Brocklehurst (113)

Aubrey Arnold
04.03.15

Aubrey has been in touch. His details can now be found in the 'where are they now' section.

Thomas Oliver Davies
04.03.15

Thomas Oliver Davies has been in contact and would like to know if anybody out there is still alive? My number was 60. I sailed mostly on Castle boats. There was Winchester Castle, Carnarvon Castle, two oil tankers - Acavus & Rapana (shell boats). I jumped ship in Australia in September 1949 and have been here ever since. I will be 86 years old this April. Could not find teachers names on the site. When I was there, their names were Turner, Newton, Crisp, Daley, Pionson and Curtis - he was the gym instructor. It was a very tough school in my day. I was in the band and gymnastics team. Please let me know if there are any others on this site from Russell Coates Nautical School 1939-1945. Any information would be much appreciated.

Dave Brown Information Needed

Does anyone have any photographs or information regarding Dave Brown who attended the school from 1945-1949? Please let us know if you find anything.

Reunion Booking Details
11.01.15

Further note from Stan Oram re: booking details

Hi Everyone,

We are now up to 26 serious takers (46 guests) and I have had no comment from any in S38 /39 /40 re a solo event so I have confirmed with the hotel that we are up to speed and will now be confirming our bookings.

In order to do so could any who intend to join us (both those who have already told me they want to be included and those that have made no commitment yet) telephone the Langstone Cliff hotel directly and make their individual booking personally.  The Telephone Number is 01626 868000. You may use a credit or a debit card or even a cheque if, unlike me, you can actually find your cheque book. The deposit is £20 per person per booking. Please mention that you are included with the HMS Fisgard Party – even if you intend to bring family with you (other than spouse/partner – that’s taken as read!!). This will mean that your booking will be allocated from our provisionally booked rooms and that the hotel can keep me in sync with who has booked.

It would be helpful if you could  send me a confirmation email once you have booked with the hotel so that I can build an attendees list from which we will draw up a table plan in due course (John and Norma, your help will be appreciated). I will append below the current updated list of attendees and if when you confirm your hotel booking with me by email you could indicate if you have any seating preference in the table plan that would be a great help too

The programme for the weekend will be as you decide but a suggested format is:

Arrive Friday 24th July say 14.00 onwards,

18.00 assemble for group photo on the Veranda, Dress code whatever you wish (it’s you we want to see not what you are wearing) but suggested, men: lounge suits/blazer and slacks Ladies: Evening / cocktail dress.

7.30 for 8.00 gather for Dinner in the Washington Suite - après dinner ‘till late, in the bar.

Saturday is a free day and there is absolutely oodles to do around Dawlish both locally and within a short car, bus or train ride. The Hotel is very close to the railway station.

Saturday Lunch can be taken in the hotel if required but is not included in the tariff and then dinner will be taken a la carte in the hotel dining room. After dinner we have the use of the bar and the lounges towards the front (southish!) of the hotel.

Sunday will be breakfast and assemble for farewells before wending home – if you choose to stay on for the Sunday night there is usually a reduced cost but I haven’t established that this year (and since I’ve just spoke to the hotel  twice I’ll take it as read that it will be the same this year!).

2015 Dawlish Reunion
11.01.15

Stan Oram has further information regarding the reunion he is planning

Hi Folks,

A quick update on the proposed reunion but before I get into that a quick message addressed specifically to all S38/39/40.

Since it is the 55th anniversary for series 38, 39 and 40 there might be some who think that me organising a mixed class do (including other entries than those three) might draw support away from a specific 55th that they were organising. If anyone feels that way please speak now or forever.........

If someone did want a specific entry 55th I don’t want to tread on anyone’s toes so if I am in danger of doing so please speak up (quickly!).

For now the current list of those intending to come is as follows:

This amounts to 21 rooms and 33/35 guests (if there is no  x1 or x2 against your name above I don’t yet know if you are a single or a double/twin)so I reckon we are a viable group – not enough yet to want to occupy the Washington suite for our main dinner but a good group anyway. I suspect that by the reunion date we would have more than doubled that number so I reckon we can tell the hotel we are good to go. I will do that tomorrow evening or Monday if I have no adverse reaction from the 55thers.  Once we have decided we are a definite I will post out the hotel phone numbers etc and details of any notes you might need, to allow each of you to telephone and confirm your own bookings and pay your room guest deposit.

Kindest Regards

2015 Reunion - Update
06.01.15

Stan Oram has sent an update on the reunion he is organising.

Hi Guys - Great news - (with apologies to any ladies reading this) - I cocked it up!!.

Here are the precise details regarding the proposed dates for a possible reunion at Dawlish (and for those who have already replied I will go through your responses and if there is anything specific to reply to I will do that - otherwise please take this as my response so far).

The dates are: Friday 24th to Sunday the 26th July 2015.

The Cost - Major correction - £70 per person per night (Double or Twin with two occupants), £80 per person per night Single, - all for Dinner Bed and Breakfast. The single room supplement I hope can be negotiated away if we get enough takers. I suspect also that the Sunday night would be available at a reduced tariff as it was before if you wanted to extend for three nights.

The Big Dinner - The Washington Suite (The Ballroom) will be occupied by a wedding party on the Saturday night but is available for our use on the Friday night which means of course that we could just arrange our big celebration dinner for the Friday instead of the Saturday. We would also have the use of the private bar in the Washington suite for Apres Dinner mingling!!

So - with this revised data I still need a fairly swift response indicating if you are interested. Geoff (the owner) has said that all his rooms will fill up if we don't take then so we need to commit to the dates if we want to go ahead and we will then reserve an appropriate number of rooms as we have before. This provisional booking would be reviewed on a regular basis and excess room released as time goes by - we (and the hotel) don't want to be holding provisionally booked rooms which they then cannot let if we release them too late. Those that came before will know but if we commit to go ahead you will then be asked to make a room reservation directly with the hotel and quoting that your are part of 'The HMS Fisgard Party'.

I will of course let you all know as soon as a decision is made to 'GO' or 'NO GO' - if above 25 (say) are up for it that will ensure a good gathering when you add in wives and partners so I reckon that would be a good point to say 'GO'!

I hope you all had a good Christmas and whatever comes of a possible reunion I hope you all have a great New Year.

Kindest Regards

Stan

2015 Reunion and a Happy Christmas to all S34 to S40 on my list
22.12.14

Stan Oram has written in. The message reads as follows:

Hi Guys - and a Very Happy Christmas to you all - that is all my Series 30 somethings and S40.

I put the 2015 reunion first in the subject line just to get your attention in case you saw 'Happy Christmas' and moved on. Next year is S38/39/40's 55th anniversary so someone may already be planning something and please do not let me interfere if you are. However - it has been two years since our mixed class reunion at Dawlish and I just feel we are all too old to wait 5 years between a good get together so this is addressed to all S34 - S40 that I know of.

I have spoken to the Langstone Cliff Hotel in Dawlish and the only weekend in June or July 2015 when they could accommodate anywhere near 50 bookings is the last weekend in July. Geoff (the Grandfather of the family who own the hotel) has pencilled in a provisional booking for 50 rooms (without me asking him to) and I said I would get back to him within a week or so to say what expressions of interest there is.

There are a couple of 'buts' - the first is that it is into the summer season so the cost if £140 per person per night for Dinner Bed and Breakfast - the only cost to add to that is lunch and bar. The second 'but' is that they have a wedding booked so the Washington Suite (the ballroom) is taken up (at least for the Saturday - we might be able to have our big dinner on the Friday - I didn't ask that). This means that our dinner would  be in the Dining room (Saturday) and Apres Dinner mingling would be in the small bar near the dining room/entrance foyer and the lounges.

If the date or cost of this weekend puts you off but you like the idea of another mixed class reunion then please let me have your ideas for dates and venues. I still harbour the idea of a week long cheapy package deal abroad somewhere which would not cost much more than two nights in Dawlish (or anywhere else in the UK) but anything anywhere will do me!

All the best for Christmas and  the New Year - let's make it a good one!

Kindest Regards
